Derelict Building in New York's Greene Street

I stumbled across this building while finding my way to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Annex in New York's Mercer Street.

The building obviously stood out from the others surrounding it which made it an interesting subject with it's colors and textures.

The Holy Name Cathedral of Chicago.

View Large on Black at www.thewindypixel.com!

Leave it up to Mr.-meticulously-plan-the-shoot-ahead-of-time-and-never-fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants over here to decide that the one time he makes it to Holy Name Cathedral for a bit of HDR photography is 10 minutes before Sunday Mass. Oops. I think one of the undercurrents of photography that keeps me coming back to the hobby is the connection you get with the atmosphere and architecture of a space when you are behind the camera. Be it the glacial cathedrals of granite, the academic ivory tower of Rockefeller or the Holy Name Cathedral, there is a harmony of angle and space that unifies them, yet the difference in atmosphere and emotion is substantive. I think I prefer the rough-hewn and wind-swept temples of nature, but these holy places have their charm as well. The idea behind the cathedral is inspiring and silly all at once. A symbol of reverence for the divine, yet inherently opposed in its luxury to the symbol of Christ, it seems to me an interesting juxtaposition of wealth, religion and history. I admit, however, that I am grateful for the largess of the major churches in building these spaces. It reminds me of the Postal Service - they could get away with issuing blank stamps with little more adornment than a number indicating their value, yet they spend great effort in creating a seemingly endless variety of unique designs.

The nice folks over there (it's the seat of the Archdiocese of Chicago by the by) let me poke around with my tripod for a minute or two before services started, and I snapped off a frame or two I liked. I will definitely be making my way back here soon.

Shot of the Emirates Towers from under the Gate building at DIFC

I was just doing one last scan through my shots from my shoot at DIFC and can't believe I missed this one.

The previous Under the Gate post was shot looking straight up at the gate. This is the view facing towards the "old" part of Dubai (away from the Burj Khalifa). I had a black & white HDR in mind when shooting it. However whilst processing it I kept coming back to the colour one so have stuck with it. This is an 8 exposure HDR which has been a real project today. Unfortunately it was shot around lunch time in the heart of the financial centre of Dubai. As the foot traffic was increasing I set up my tripod in a hurry to limit the number of people in the frame. Also, as I was there with about 15 other photographers who were on the same Landscape course taken by David Nightingale , so there were a queue of them trying to shoot the same scene and they kept getting in the way. One of them actually leant over the water and got wet and as a result spilt water on the floor which I couldn't avoid in my shot. As a result after tone-mapping the image in Photomatix Pro, I spent a considerable amount of time in Photoshop cloning out the people and water. After this, I leveled it, added the sharpness using Topaz Details and then made several masked curves adjustments to finish it off. If you are interested in seeing the original shot I have posted it here.

Oh, and for those of you who asked about by damaged camera and lens from my desert shoot , Nikon fixed the D300, however they said the lens was beyond reasonable repair so I just ordered a replacement. I'm now taking a break from architectural shots for while now...

Five Stop HDR + Topaz

The Texas State Capitol is one of those “Grand Old Buildings”. I love grand old buildings. I understand that ‘old’ is a relative term and to those of you reading this in Europe or Asia, or in virtually in any country but America the Texas Capitol building completed in 1888 may seem relatively ‘new’. Regardless, even in the short span of 120 years the ability to create new buildings of carved granite has simply become too expensive. Today we create fabulous modern glass skinned buildings that while they are also often quite beautiful. They are never quite as grand.

Clover Field - San Francisco

With St. Patty's day just around the corner, what better way to share the holiday by showing you exactly where the leprechauns live!
This lovely clover field is packed full. I spent some time with my wife going through it, to see if we can find us a 4 leaf shamrock. After a few minutes, we came up with one, and we will save it and have it in cased in clear plastic mold.

If you are wondering about the framing, i used Nik Software Color Efx Pro 3.0 to created the drawn like edge. great piece of software.

Note: i decided this photo need a bit more color, i used topaz adjust 4 to apply the painting look and adjust the colors. hope you like.

Yokohamas Funpark from the Landmark Tower. Tilt shifted to look like a toy landscape.

I know, I posted a similar picture of this scene some days ago. But this time I tried my very first Tilt Shift. I know it is not perfect and I don’t really know how to do it the right way. If you are an expert in Tilt Shifting I would appreciate your guidance and council.
